13 weeks long, the high school football season is at times a marathon, and at other times a sprint.  Thousands of games are played across the state, and we try to get our cameras to as many of them as possible.  Below are the cream of the crop; our 2011 Top Plays.

Alright welcome back to my blog, this is part two of a Man’s take on the game of high school football. Quick survey of readers, who likes offense? Go ahead raise your hand while you are reading this. Seriously, raise your right hand and say, “I love offense in high school football.” OF COURSE YOU DO! We as Americans love offense like we love Hulk Hogan, Ronald Reagan, and anything deep-fried.  Don’t get me wrong, hard hitting defense is violent and produces champions, but nothing can replace an 80-yard game winning touchdown drive with seconds to play in the game.

When you utter the words Williamsburg, Virginia, one usually thinks 18th century colonial history. But next week Williamsburg will be a hot bead for high school football players hoping to catch the eye of college recruiters from across the country. The event is called the "Football University: Top Gun Camp" and more than 1000 high school football players will be on hand for the event. Included in that group will be five Kansas players, three from the Wichita area. They include Northwest teammates Quanzee Johnson (RB)

I have a very real fear for this era of high school football players. My awful gut feeling says that current high school football players who are lucky enough to advance to college (and for the select few the pro level) will NOT be playing the true game of football. The real game of football is a hard hitting, violent, ruthless, uncensored, and grizzly. You get my point. What the NFL brass is doing to the purity of the game of football is borderline criminal. Basically NFL brass is saying, "hey we what you to still play football.

Drew O'Brien played just one season of high school football. But that was enough to impress the coaches at Fort Hays State University. The Thomas More Prep senior signe on this week to continue his career with the Tigers. O'Brien was an all-state selection in both football and soccer this past fall at TMP. He was the second-leading scorer for the Monarch football team with 34 points and helped TMP record its first winning record since 2003. O'Brien also averaged 38 yards per punt and earned Class 3A all-state honors in football, as a punter and kicker.

With the final week of the regular season upon us, teams are in one of three places. For some, it's a last chance to qualify for the playoffs. For others, they've already qualified and this week is a chance to tune-up, and stay injury free.  And finally, for some teams, they've already been eliminated, and this is the last hurrah for the class of 2013. The rivalry between the Derby Panthers and Wichita Heights Falcons has been contentious, to say the least, for the past couple of seasons.

The Road to the State Title begins tonight for 6A, 5A & 2-1A football teams. Win and the dream is alive. Lose, and it's time to start training for winter sports. On paper, the 6A bracket has some great battles tonight, with Wichita Heights traveling to Hutchinson as two of the most successful programs of this young decade square off. The Falcons have been in the past three state title games, while Hutchinson is still in the midst of a dominate run that includes state titles in seven of the last eight seasons.

For high school football fans, you might as well call today Christmas.  It's the day you've been waiting for since last November when the 2011 season ended. It's time to play a little football. The schedule makers even have a special present for you, and that's a slate full of big-time games with major implications, even though it's only the first week of the season. Last season, the winner of the week 1 tussle between Bishop Carroll and Wichita Heights was in the drivers seat for the rest of the season.  Heights won the game, and went on to win the league as well.
