Cimarron, Kan. — The Southwestern Heights Mustangs solidly defeated the Cimarron Bluejays last year. The roles were reversed on Friday night as the 6-1 Bluejays took care of the 1-6 Mustangs 56-14.
Cimarron Head Coach Doug Minneman said Southwestern Heights has good athletes with good size. The Bluejays made some adjustments to their defense throughout the week but although the Mustangs looked good on paper the Bluejays seemed to have their offense down to a science.
"They will try and get their quarterback outside with option, sweep and roll out passes," Minneman said. "We need to keep outside contain and force him to cut it back inside."
Any Mustang plays to the outside were extinguished quickly. The Cimarron defense was a dominant force and its offense was multi-dimensional, making it difficult for the Mustang defense to stop.On the opening drive Cimarron junior Ty Clark pounded in a five yard touchdown up the middle to put the Bluejays on the board. Clark has over 1,000 yards rushing this season and when he got into space on Friday night he was almost unstoppable. At the end of the first quarter Cimarron had a strong lead 21-0.
