Great Bend boys, Buhler girls strike gold at regional bowling

GREAT BEND, Kansas — The Great Bend boys will take their third straight crack at bringing home a state bowling title next week in Wichita. The Panthers held serve on their home lanes, besting Liberal on Saturday to take home the regional crown, by rolling a at team score of 2415, to the Redskins 2364.

"We came out the first two games really tight," said Great Bend head bowling coach Mike Perry. "I told them we need to just relax and have fun that last game. Boy they ratcheted it up and they shot lights out that last game."

Dakota Conaway rolled a 180, 194 and 227 to lead the Panthers with a 601 on the day. The top individual game of the day came from Liberal's Hunter Rinehart who bowled a 264 in his opening game and the best combine score over three games was Austin Gronau of Newton bowling the best individual round of the of the day on the boys side with a 626.

Gronau took home regional gold on the individual side, followed by Cory Roth of Holcomb (625) and Lane McQuire of Cheney (624).

Joining the Panthers and Redskins at state will be individual qualifiers Gronau, Roth, McGuire, Joel Morey of McPherson (573), Taylor Siruta of Cheney (566), and Matt Shriver also of McPherson (562).

On the girls side, Buhler had a dominating performance, sweeping the top three medals lead by an impressive 650 by Casey Bailey. The Lady Crusaders easily besting McPherson with a score of 2372 to the Lady Bull Pups 2131 to take home the regional title.

"I'm beyond proud, there's no words to describe how these girls performed today," said Buhler head coach Skip Wilson. "We told ourselves last week if we came in and made our spares and did everything fundamentally, we would walk out with the trophy that you see these girls holding."

Bailey was followed teammates Kirsten Allen (586) and Destiny Bruce (571) in the individual medals.

Joining the Lady Crusaders and Lady Bull Pups at state will be individual qualifiers Kylee Sorella of Maize South (548), Makenzie Senn of Newton (534), Jacy Quade of Great Bend (526), Kelli Kermer of Great Bend (514), Miranda Hejny of Great Bend (506) and Kimberly Vanley of Liberal (500).
