Buhler falls at home to Holton

November 19, 2010|By HEATHER WILLIAMS | Eyewitness Sports

Not a lot of people expected Buhler to still be playing this week. So a team can do one of two things after going on the road and pulling a big upset. They can A: use the momentum and ride it to a state championship or B: come out flat after the emotional high of the previous week. For Buhler, the answer was unfortunately, B.

Although early on they stood toe to toe with Holton. Both defenses were tough, in fact, the first 1st down of the game didn't come until 9 minutes into the game. A few plays after picking up that first down, Holton would get the game's first score. Bryce Barnett with the 30-yard touchdown run, putting the Wildcats up 7-0.

Holton really won the battle in trenches. The second touchdown of the game was on a bruising run by Jay Morris in which he ran over 3 Buhler defenders. The Wildcats added one more score before the half, on a 35-yard touchdown run by Rob Riederner.

Holton's defense forcing the Crusaders to throw the ball more than they wanted to, forcing 4 Buhler interceptions. The fourth, by Gunner McKenna, set up yet another score, and it was McKenna finishing what he started with a 43-yard touchdown run.

Buhler would finally get on the board when Chandler Shantz found JP Lohrentz for a 57-yard strike, but it was not nearly enough. Holton added two more scores for the 42-7 final.

The Wildcats will play Louisburg for the state championship next Saturday. Buhler finishes the season at 12-1.
